In June and July 2016, Dr. Nguyen Duc Lien and Dr. Dang Anh Tuan from Hanoi, Vietnam traveled to Children’s of Alabama (COA) to work with the pediatric neurosurgery and epilepsy programs. Dr. Lien is a pediatric neurosurgeon and Dr. Tuan a pediatric epilepsy neurologist. Together they are building the first team for surgical care of pediatric epilepsy in the nation of Vietnam. Patients with seizures that are not controlled by medications can often benefit from surgery to remove the abnormal brain that is causing the seizures. However, selecting patients who might benefit from this approach requires a multidisciplinary team of experienced neurologists and surgeons. Dr. Brandon Rocque traveled to Hanoi in September of 2015 to perform the first corpus callosotomy and the first intraoperative electrocorticpgraphy (ECOG) in Vietnam, along with Dr. Lien. This visit by Drs. Lien and Tuan has strengthened the collaboration between the epilepsy surgery teams at COA and in Hanoi. We are excited about helping these excellent doctors build an epilepsy surgery program for Vietnam.
